Clearly, tempers run high and attitudes vary widely about the benefits and perils of self-publishing. When asked to weigh in on the controversy involving the removal of Cipriano’s and others’ work on KDP, Park acknowledged that Amazon isn’t perfect. “There are some people who abuse the Kindle platform, and that’s slimy,” she told a journalist. “But some of these cases sound to me like KDP has misinterpreted something or is not communicating well, and it’s shutting off accounts with insufficient explanation. They [Amazon] built this world to let people publish and encouraged them to get their work out there. So I really don’t know, but I am frustrated for them if they’ve truly not done anything wrong.”6
Now that we’ve covered the pros and cons of self-publishing as a commercial matter, let’s turn to some of the legal issues that can arise in this context. We’ll start out with e-books as the most popular form of independent publishing and then move on to print-on-demand and self-published audiobooks.
